Tempe International Triathlon 2011
This year I did the Olympic length of the Tempe Tri. My original goal was to break 3:00 in either this race, or the Deuces Wild race coming up in 3 weeks. Given the lower priority I've given my training lately, I'll be very happy if I come close to a PR on the Show Low race. Entering the race yesterday, I had 3 goals in mind really: 1) break my swim pr for this distance (thought that should be pretty easy), 2) break my overall pr (thought that would be tough, but possible), 3) break 3 hours total (this was pie in the sky). At least I met one goal :)
Right after they closed transition, they announced that the start of the race was delayed... the barricade people had someone quit on them, so they didn't put up a whole truck's worth of barricades. It seemed like it was about an hour late by the time my wave came up. My race age this year is 35, so I'm in a new age group now... not sure if that is good or bad (35-39 always seems pretty competitive too).
When the swim started, I came out way too fast. There were a lot of people around, so I was trying to keep up / find some open space, which are opposing ideas. After the usual getting hit/kicked/cut off/pincer moved... I slowed down a bit and things started to open up. I noticed right away that my upper arms did not feel right... felt like I had a brick taped to them or something. I just kept going though. After making the turn to the south and rounding the buoy to go back west, I checked my watch (first time using my new waterproof Garmin). It showed 16 minutes, which was right where I thought I should be. As usual, my form seemed to improve as I went (taking more strokes per breath, head down more of the time). Got out of the water and ran up the beach and stairs to transition. My time was reported as 33:22, but that counts some of that transition, so it was really a minute or so faster. Even at 33:22, that is 6 minutes improvement over my previous best, so I'm very happy with that. That would be about the last thing I was happy with :).
Well, really that's not true. My bike leg was actually pretty decent. The course seems pretty flat, but it really isn't. Basically everywhere was up or downhill a bit. There was only one real "hill" (part on Curry that I had to go up 4 times total), but a lot of little grades that were big enough to slow me down quite a bit (doesn't take much). I felt good for about the first quarter of the bike, but then hit some slower sections and my drive took a bit of a hit. Overall though it wasn't too bad. I averaged 16 mph flat, and my previous best was 16.3 mph. I only really gave back 3 minutes or so of the gain I made in the swim, but for some reason it seemed a lot worse at the time.
When I started running, I did some guesstimations and for some reason I thought I would need to run a 1:10 10k in order to break my pr. That was wrong. I ran 1:33:43 (most of that after basically giving up)... and I was only 16 minutes off of my best overall Olympic time. I could have run a 1:17 and beaten it, which is worse than both of my other Olympic runs. I was immediately hurting though (my left foot was not pleased)...and it didn't take long for me to just quit on it. I didn't just plain stop, but I didn't have very much run in me, so I walked a ton. As usual I kept making calculations in my head of what I'd need to run to get there by x, etc... but mostly it seemed like I was just waiting until I could safely say "well I can't do that, so might as well just walk it". So, the run was my big disappointment. 1:33:43 is over 15:00 mile pace, which is absurdly slow.
Overall, I'm glad I did the event. I managed a goal, and really should've broken my pr if I hadn't given up on myself. This was just my first race though, and I haven't been on my game as far as training, so I'm not going to beat myself up too much about it. I have 3 weeks now to get ready for the Show Low race, and I can take another shot at the pr there. I've already somewhat written off these races (which is probably part of the problem)... so if I struggle again there I'm thinking I will go do the Lake Powell Olympic race in October. I should be in a better position to do well there after the half-ironman in August.
